The Malaysian government plans to implement age restrictions for social media users under 16, with an expected rollout next year. This proposed measure reportedly mirrors a similar ban being adopted by Australia. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil indicated that platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok may be mandated to verify the age of their users. He suggested that an electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) system, leveraging government-issued identification and biometric authentication, could be employed for this purpose. Minister Fadzil stated an expectation for all platforms to implement these verification protocols by next year.
