Meta Platforms has initiated the process of informing Australian users under 16 that their accounts on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads will be closed.
This development follows Australia's introduction of a new social media ban for individuals under 16, which is scheduled to become effective on December 10. Additionally, from December 4, minors below this age will be prevented from creating new accounts on Meta's platforms. Regulatory estimates indicate that approximately 150,000 Facebook users and 350,000 Instagram users are within the 13-15 age range affected by this policy.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese characterized the ban as "world-leading" and intended to allow "kids be kids," while e-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant stated its aim is to safeguard teens from "pressures and risks." Although Meta has voiced its opposition to the measure, the company has affirmed its commitment to adhering to the new law. Meta acknowledged that younger users might attempt to bypass age verification methods, such as "video selfies" for facial age scans, but reiterated its dedication to meeting compliance obligations.
