A local activist group, the Resistance Committee for El Fasher, has reported that at least 60 individuals were killed following alleged drone and artillery strikes attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group. The strikes reportedly targeted the Dar al-Arqam displacement center, located within a university in El Fasher, western Sudan. The city, home to 400,000 people, is noted as the last state capital in Darfur not under RSF control. The wider conflict in Sudan has led to over 150,000 fatalities, displaced more than 14 million people, and contributed to acute hunger for nearly 25 million.
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, conveyed his concern regarding the alleged disregard for civilian life by the RSF in El Fasher, referencing attacks on civilian structures, and urged all parties to the conflict to uphold international law. He also recommended that the RSF and other parties consider the recent conviction of Ali Kushayb, a figure associated with the Janjaweed militia, from which the RSF developed.
