A high-profile meeting of world leaders and activists is set to occur on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York to discuss a road map for the repatriation of Rohingya Muslims. These individuals, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, have resided in large refugee camps in Bangladesh for eight years since fleeing Myanmar, where they were stripped of their citizenship. Conditions within these camps reportedly include restrictions on movement, the demolition of shops, and the closure of schools. Notably, no Rohingya representatives from the camps are scheduled to attend this meeting. A Rohingya leader, Showkutara, expressed concern regarding decisions being made about their lives without their direct presence. While the United Nations and the Bangladeshi government have previously sponsored trips for Rohingya to represent their community on the world stage, such support was not provided for this particular conference.
