Former U.S. President's Bagram Air Base Remarks Elicit Taliban Rejection Amid Dialogue Possibility

Former U.S. President Donald Trump indicated on Thursday that his administration has been working towards the United States regaining control of Bagram Air Base, a key facility outside Kabul, Afghanistan, which U.S. forces abandoned in 2021 shortly before the Taliban retook control of the country.

During a news conference, Mr. Trump described the base as strategically important, stating that “it’s an hour away from where China makes its nuclear weapons,” and suggested that the Taliban “need things from us.” He added that these comments marked the first public acknowledgment of potential negotiations for the base’s reacquisition.

However, Taliban officials later rejected Mr. Trump’s suggestion regarding the reacquisition of the base. Despite this rejection, they expressed openness to the possibility of future talks aimed at improving ties between the two countries.
