The conflict in Gaza has resulted in a significant number of journalist fatalities, with 195 Palestinian media workers killed by Israeli forces since the beginning of the war nearly two years ago, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. This toll has prompted Brown University’s Costs of War project to label Gaza a “news graveyard,” indicating the severe risks faced by those reporting from the region.

Reporting conditions for journalists in Gaza are marked by extreme danger and profound personal hardship. Israeli officials have previously accused some journalists, including Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif, of being current or former militants; al-Sharif was among five journalists killed in an August strike outside a Gaza hospital. Additionally, a survey by Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism found that nine out of ten Gaza news workers had their homes destroyed, with many experiencing exhaustion and fear. Unlike foreign correspondents, local Palestinian reporters often possess a firsthand experience of decades of conflict, contributing to the unique challenges they face.
