Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, stated on Friday that the nation intends to ensure Russian President Vladimir Putin can enter the country for a planned summit with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Budapest. This announcement comes while Putin remains subject to an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for alleged war crimes.
Subsequently, Russian President Putin and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán engaged in a phone call to discuss the upcoming summit. The Kremlin reported that Putin briefed Orbán on his conversation with Trump, and Orbán reportedly confirmed Hungary’s readiness to provide the necessary conditions for organizing the event. An unnamed senior European Union diplomat remarked that if Hungary were not to execute the arrest warrant, it would be “not helpful.”
