IMD Issues Maharashtra Heavy Rain Alert as Cyclone Shakhti Intensifies

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for several districts in Maharashtra as Cyclone Shakhti intensifies over the Arabian Sea. This developing weather event marks the first cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea following the monsoon season.

Forecasts predict heavy to very heavy rains for areas including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. Additionally, interior parts of Maharashtra, specifically East Vidarbha and Marathwada, are expected to experience significant precipitation. There is a possibility of flooding in low-lying areas of North Konkan, attributed to intense cloud formation and atmospheric moisture infiltration.

The severe cyclonic storm ‘Shakhti’ is continuing its westward movement over the northeast Arabian Sea at a speed of 18 kmph. In response to the evolving situation, authorities have advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the specified sea areas during this period.
