Kerala Roads Identified for National Highway Upgrades

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated steps to develop five additional national highway projects within Kerala, as communicated to the State government. Public Works Minister P.A. Riyas confirmed that procedures are underway for the preparation of project documents to upgrade several key routes to national highway status. These routes include the Ramanattukara-Kozhikode Airport Road, the Kannur Airport Road (Chovva-Mattannur), the Kodungallur-Angamaly stretch, and the Vypeen-Matsyafed Tourist Office Road. Furthermore, plans include the construction of bypasses at Kothamangalam and Muvattupuzha along the Kochi-Madurai National Highway. The NHAI has launched the tender process to appoint an agency responsible for preparing these project documents, addressing a request from the State government. Specific development proposals detail the upgrade of the 12-kilometer Ramanattukara-Kozhikode Airport Road and the 20-kilometer Kodungallur-Angamaly Road to a four-lane configuration. The 30-kilometer Kannur Airport Road, the 13-kilometer Vypeen-Matsyafed Road, and both bypasses are slated for development as two-lane paved shoulders.
