Lambeth Council, a local authority, has initiated eviction proceedings against 63 households whose tenancies were managed by Homes for Lambeth, a group of companies wholly owned by the council. An additional 24 households voluntarily vacated properties after receiving Section 21 notices. These actions are occurring as the council transitions management of these properties back to direct internal oversight, following a recommendation to improve efficiency.
The council states that regaining possession of these properties is intended to address the “most urgent” housing needs in the borough, including providing temporary accommodation for vulnerable families experiencing homelessness. One resident affected by these proceedings expressed the significant impact on their life. A spokesperson for Lambeth Council acknowledged the “incredibly difficult choices” faced, citing the daily need to accommodate nearly 5,000 vulnerable homeless families in temporary housing. The report notes these proceedings are taking place despite a manifesto pledge by the Labour Party to outlaw no-fault evictions.
