Madhya Pradesh Child Deaths: Opposition Demands Inquiry into Cough Syrup Link

The Madhya Pradesh Congress, led by chief Jitu Patwari, has called for the resignation of the state’s Health Minister and a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe following the deaths of at least 22 children in the state. These fatalities are suspected to be linked to renal failure after the consumption of Coldrif cough syrup, which is manufactured in Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu. Most of the affected children are from Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, with some currently receiving treatment in hospitals in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Patwari alleged that the state government’s negligence contributed to the deaths. He stated that the first death occurred on September 3, and claimed that no post-mortem examinations were conducted or departmental meetings held even after several subsequent fatalities. Furthermore, he characterized the deaths as “culpable homicide” and demanded the removal of the Principal Secretary (Health). Madhya Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister, Rajendra Shukla, currently holds the portfolio for the state’s health ministry.
