Madhya Pradesh Paediatrician Detained in Probe of Child Deaths Linked to Cough Syrup

A paediatrician, Dr. Praveen Soni, has been detained for questioning in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, concerning the deaths of at least nine children. Dr. Soni, who serves as a government paediatrician and operates a private practice, was taken into custody on Saturday, October 4, 2025. He is accused of allegedly prescribing Coldrif syrup, a product that has since been banned and is reportedly linked to the fatalities that occurred over a one-month period.

Authorities have filed a case against Dr. Soni and the syrup’s manufacturer, Sresan Pharmaceuticals, a company located in Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu. The charges include BNS Sections 105 and 276, in addition to Section 27 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Police have indicated plans for thorough interrogation before a formal arrest and intend to coordinate with Tamil Nadu Police for the ongoing investigation. A team led by a Deputy SP-level officer is expected to be dispatched to Tamil Nadu as part of the probe.
