The Congress party has concluded its long-standing alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu. This decision, announced on Wednesday, facilitates the formation of a government in the state with the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor Vijay.

The alliance between the Congress and DMK has a history marked by several shifts. It initially formed in 1969 when the DMK allied with the Indira Gandhi-led faction of the Congress for the 1971 general election. The DMK later joined the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) prior to the 2004 Lok Sabha election. A notable separation occurred in 2013, before the 2014 general election, when the DMK withdrew support from the Congress over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue. However, the Congress subsequently returned to the DMK-led alliance. In a recent general election, while the broader DMK-led alliance secured 36 out of 39 seats in Tamil Nadu, the Congress, as part of that alliance, won only 3 seats, a significant decrease from its 31 seats in 1962.
