A United States official stated that Washington had "permitted" India to temporarily purchase Russian oil. This action was cited as a means to address disruptions in global energy supplies, particularly to cover "temporary global oil supply gaps caused by the Iranians" during the West Asia conflict.
In response, India's Congress party sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning his silence regarding the US official's remark. The opposition party alleged that the Prime Minister's perceived inaction undermined India's sovereignty and demanded answers from the government.
Separately, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a 30-day waiver on March 5, allowing New Delhi to purchase Russian crude.
