The Nobel committee has announced Maria Corina Machado, an opposition leader from Venezuela, as the recipient of the 2025 Peace Prize.
The award recognizes Machado “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
Responding to questions concerning US President Donald Trump’s past assertions about his eligibility for the prize, Nobel committee chairperson Jørgen Watne Frydnes stated, “This committee sits in a room filled with the portraits of all laureates, and that room is filled with both courage and integrity.” Frydnes added that decisions are based “on the work and the will of Alfred Nobel.”
