Mumbai is currently experiencing a period of above-normal temperatures, locally known as ‘October heat,’ following the monsoon’s withdrawal. Maximum temperatures reached 33.7°C on Friday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting sustained temperatures above 34°C for the coming week. This temperature surge is attributed to dry easterly winds. Although a brief period of post-monsoon rain and thunderstorms is forecast between October 16 and 17, temperatures are expected to remain elevated.
Simultaneously, the city’s air quality has deteriorated. The Air Quality Index (AQI) rose to 152 on Saturday morning, classified as moderate. Of Mumbai’s 26 monitoring stations, only one, located in Borivali East, recorded ‘satisfactory’ air quality at an AQI of 80.
