Odisha Records Extreme Rainfall as Depression Weakens, IMD Reports

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that four locations in Odisha experienced extremely heavy rainfall, exceeding 20 cm, during the 24-hour period concluding at 8:30 AM on Friday, October 3, 2025. This significant precipitation was attributed to a deep depression affecting the region. Thuamul Rampur in Kalahandi district recorded the highest rainfall at 352 mm, followed by R. Udaygiri (291 mm) and Gumma (211 mm) in Gajapati district, and Junagarh (210 mm) in Kalahandi.

In addition to these extreme levels, the IMD noted that ten other locations experienced very heavy rainfall, measuring between 12 cm and 20 cm, with an additional 42 places reporting heavy rainfall, ranging from 7 cm to 11 cm. The deep depression, which had moved north-northwestwards at a speed of 10 kmph, subsequently weakened into a depression. It is projected to continue its north-northwestward movement across interior Odisha and gradually weaken into a well-marked low-pressure system within 12 hours from Friday morning. Consequently, an ‘Orange’ alert was issued for Sundargarh district, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms with lightning, and gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph on Friday, October 3.

The incessant rainfall over the past two days led to a wall collapse in Gajapati district, resulting in one fatality. Furthermore, two individuals were reported missing following landslides in six different locations within the same district.
