OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced plans to expand the range of permissible content on its ChatGPT chatbot, which will include erotica for users verified as adults. Altman stated that this initiative reflects the company’s commitment to “treat adult users like adults” and is now possible due to the successful mitigation of “serious mental health issues” and the implementation of new tools.
The CEO elaborated that previous content restrictions on ChatGPT were established to ensure careful consideration of mental health. These relaxed guidelines are expected to be rolled out more fully in December, coinciding with the broader deployment of age-gating mechanisms.
The report also mentions a prior lawsuit filed against OpenAI by the parents of a U.S. teenager. Additionally, Ms. Kim, an individual involved in a separate lawsuit concerning Meta’s Instagram and adolescent mental health, commented that big tech companies in this sector are using people “like guinea pigs.” OpenAI had previously indicated it was implementing a solution to limit content pertinent to the mentioned lawsuit.
