An event marking World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, organized by the Pain & Palliative Care Society, Thrissur, explored themes of empathy and universal access to palliative care.
Writer Sara Joseph highlighted that true solace originates from recognizing the suffering of others, advocating for empathy as an essential human virtue. She also underscored the societal need for dialogue concerning the right to a peaceful death.
E. Divakaran, co-founder of the Pain & Palliative Care Society, addressed the global theme, “Achieving the promise: universal access to palliative care.” He defined palliative care as comprehensive support for individuals with severe or age-related illnesses and their families. Divakaran noted Kerala’s leadership in palliative care provision across India, attributing this success to active youth involvement. He concluded that universal access requires community participation and the integration of palliative care into all layers of patient-centered healthcare.
