Regional Weather Systems Bring Heavy Rain, Snow, and Flooding Globally

Southeastern Europe is currently experiencing a period of severe weather due to a low-pressure system originating over the Mediterranean. This system has delivered widespread showers, thunderstorms, and prolonged rainfall across the region, with forecasts predicting 48-hour totals of 80-130mm of rain for much of the Balkans. Consequently, red weather warnings have been issued for areas including Serbia, southwest Romania, northeast Greece, and the Dodecanese and North Aegean Islands, highlighting potential flooding and a threat to life. Additionally, cold air from eastern Europe has led to significant snowfall in the Dinaric Alps, with some models projecting depths of up to 80cm. Strong winds also resulted in school closures on the Ionian island of Zakynthos.

Earlier in the week, other regions also contended with extreme weather events. Eastern Spain and the Balearic Islands experienced severe flooding as remnants of Hurricane Gabrielle passed over the Iberian peninsula. Concurrently, Typhoon Bualoi made landfall in central Vietnam, bringing substantial rainfall—exceeding 300mm in a 24-hour period—strong winds, and significant sea swells. These conditions led to flash floods, landslides, the closure of over 3,000 roads, and the isolation of various communities across northern provinces. The typhoon’s impact has resulted in 36 recorded deaths, 147 injuries, and 21 individuals remaining unaccounted for.
