Activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested in Leh on September 26, 2025, under the National Security Act (NSA), following violent protests in Ladakh that resulted in four fatalities and over 90 injuries. Wangchuk has denied allegations of inciting violence, stating that the unrest reflects long-standing local frustration with central policies. His wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, has filed a Habeas Corpus petition with the Supreme Court of India, asserting the illegality of his detention. Prior to this, Ms. Angmo had appealed to the President, Prime Minister, Home Minister, Law Minister, and the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh for her husband’s release. She has expressed concerns regarding the lack of information about Mr. Wangchuk’s health, current condition, and the specific grounds for his week-long detention.
