Youth-Led Protests: Digital Mobilization and Diverse Outcomes

Recent observations indicate the emergence of youth-led protests, frequently termed “Gen Z protests,” in Morocco and Madagascar. These demonstrations follow similar movements previously noted in countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, and Nepal.

In Madagascar, the protests reportedly commenced after multiple power and water supply interruptions in September. Government efforts to suppress these demonstrations resulted in over 20 fatalities. The movement, known as Gen Z Mada, originated as a youth-led initiative primarily organized and coordinated through social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok.

Across these global instances, social media has played a significant role in facilitating collective action and bringing attention to issues of common concern among young people. An expert noted that while these digital platforms enable rapid communication and coordination for demonstrations, this “fast mobilization” can sometimes lack the sustained engagement required for movements to achieve their stated objectives. Consequently, despite an observed increase in the number of protests, many such initiatives have struggled to secure their intended goals, with Nepal being an instance where protests ultimately led to a change in government.
