A total of 175 individuals have been arrested in central London during a recent pro-Palestinian demonstration. The protests, organized by Defend Our Juries, expressed support for Palestine Action, a group proscribed by the government in July, making affiliation or support illegal. The Metropolitan Police deployed 1,500 officers to address the demonstrations, noting that banners were removed and arrests were made specifically for supporting a proscribed organization. Police officials stated that the protest diverted resources from “protective security” duties for communities. The demonstrations proceeded despite prior calls from ministers and police to postpone such events following a synagogue attack in Manchester. The Community Security Trust (CST), a charity focused on Jewish community security, characterized the protests as “phenomenally tone deaf” on BBC Radio 4.
