A study released by war crime investigators at Yale University indicates that Russia operates programs for Ukrainian children from occupied territories on a larger scale than previously estimated. These initiatives reportedly involve re-education and military or police training for the children.
The investigation found that Ukrainian children have been placed in schools and cadet academies offering military-oriented training. Additionally, some children have been put up for adoption or placed in foster care with Russian families. The study details instances where Ukrainian war orphans and children separated from their parents, including those whose parents were reportedly killed, have received education in Russian language and culture.
These actions have led to investigations into alleged war crimes, with the International Criminal Court issuing arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir V. Putin and a top Russian aide on children’s issues. The Yale study also reported that Russian intelligence agencies are involved in running programs to care for Ukrainian children.
