Exxon Mobil CEO Challenges EU Corporate Sustainability Regulation

Darren Woods, CEO of Exxon Mobil, has called on European lawmakers to abandon the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).

In a recent interview, Woods described the legislation as a “significant impediment” to continued operations and business success in Europe, further categorizing it as a “very misguided effort” to address climate change by eliminating oil and gas. The CSDDD, adopted in 2024 and scheduled to take effect for companies starting in 2028 after delays, mandates that large businesses operating within the 27-nation European Union identify and prevent adverse environmental and human rights impacts throughout their global supply chains.

These comments emerged shortly after U.S. officials voiced criticism regarding the European Union’s policies aimed at accelerating the reduction of planet-heating greenhouse gas emissions. European governments are currently implementing measures to safeguard populations and economies from extreme weather events, following one of the continent’s hottest summers on record, with scientific consensus attributing exacerbation to the burning of fossil fuels.
