On Thursday at 09:31 BST, a car ramming and stabbing attack occurred at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester, resulting in the deaths of two Jewish individuals.
Police are treating the incident, which took place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish religious calendar, as a terror incident. The suspected attacker, identified by police as Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, was shot dead at the scene.
Greater Manchester Police reported that worshippers and security staff displayed “immediate bravery,” preventing the attacker from entering the synagogue building. Following the attack, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced the deployment of additional police assets to synagogues across the country.
