An incident at a Manchester synagogue has resulted in its declaration as an act of terrorism by UK authorities. During the response, armed police officers fatally shot a suspect. Two additional individuals have been arrested in connection with the event.
Laurence Taylor, head of Counter Terrorism Policing in the United Kingdom, officially stated that the incident constituted an act of terrorism. Greater Manchester Police activated “Operation Plato” protocols, a set of procedures for armed officers and emergency services responding to major incidents, including “marauding terrorist attacks.” Witness footage, verified by The New York Times, captured armed police aiming at the suspected individual on the ground. In the video, an officer can be heard warning people to “move back,” asserting that the individual allegedly had a “bomb.” The footage shows the person on the ground attempting to rise before police discharged at least one shot, causing them to fall back.
