A former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officer, John Kiriakou, has made several claims regarding US activities and influence in Pakistan during the presidency of Pervez Musharraf.
Kiriakou alleges that the United States provided millions of dollars in aid to Musharraf, which he described as effectively "purchasing" his cooperation. He further claimed that Musharraf handed over control of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal to the US, a measure reportedly taken out of concern that the weapons could fall into terrorist hands. Kiriakou stated he was told this unofficially while stationed in Pakistan in 2002.
The former officer also asserted that Musharraf allowed the US to operate freely in Pakistan in exchange for military and economic aid. Additionally, Kiriakou suggested that Musharraf maintained support from the military by allowing "activities against India" while publicly cooperating with US counterterrorism efforts, a dual approach he believed appeased both the military and certain extremist factions.
