A Paris court has convicted former French President Nicolas Sarkozy of criminal conspiracy related to the financing of his 2007 presidential campaign. The court determined that funds were sought from the government of former Libyan leader Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi. While acquitted of separate charges of corruption and illegal campaign financing in this specific case, Mr. Sarkozy has faced multiple legal challenges since leaving office. These include previous guilty verdicts for corruption, influence peddling, and campaign spending violations in unrelated cases, in addition to being stripped of France’s highest distinction, the Legion of Honor.
