The government has announced new measures granting police forces expanded authority to manage repeated public demonstrations. Under these updated guidelines, senior officers will be empowered to consider the “cumulative impact” of previous protests when determining conditions for future events. This may include directing organizers to relocate demonstrations if a specific site has been the location of multiple protests.
Non-compliance with these new conditions could result in arrest and prosecution. This announcement comes a day after approximately 500 protesters were arrested. In a separate but related development, police forces across England and Wales are providing additional security and support to 538 synagogues and Jewish community sites following a recent deadly attack at a Manchester synagogue.
