The ‘Blue Futures: Reimagining Indigo’ exhibition has commenced at Hampi Art Labs (HAL), situated near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi in Karnataka’s Vijayanagara district. This exhibition focuses on indigo, examining its role as both a color and a significant aspect of cultural memory, from its historical roots in the Indian subcontinent to its contemporary resurgence in global art, fashion, and sustainable design practices.
The show incorporates works from artists representing India, France, and Japan. Sangita Jindal, Chairperson of the foundation, inaugurated the exhibition, which she stated aligns with Hampi Art Labs' objective to facilitate new dialogues between traditional and innovative approaches. A central feature is the Indigo Pavilion, an immersive installation presenting indigo-dyed textiles.
Through a combination of archival content, sound elements, and modern visual displays, ‘Blue Futures’ charts indigo’s evolution across diverse geographical areas, including India, West Africa, and Japan, extending to its influence in contemporary international design studios. Hampi Art Labs aims to link local craftsmanship with contemporary artistic expression and to forge cultural ties across the Global South through collaborative initiatives and residency programs.
