India’s labor market data for August indicates varied trends, particularly concerning youth employment. The urban youth unemployment rate decreased to 18% from 19% in July, driven primarily by a decline in the male urban youth unemployment rate to 15.6% from 17.1%.
Conversely, rural female youth unemployment experienced an increase, reaching 14.3% in August compared to 13% in July, amid only a slight rise in their Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) to 21.4%. In contrast, the rural male youth unemployment rate decreased to 12.6% from 13%.
Nationally, the all-India unemployment rate for individuals aged 15 and above remained consistent at 5.1% in August, matching April’s figure. However, female labor force participation for this age group was reported lower than in April, and the national female Worker Population Ratio (WPR) declined to 32% in August from 32.5% in April. The overall WPR also decreased to 52.2% from April’s 52.8%. During the April-June period, Gujarat recorded the lowest youth unemployment rate at 5.6%.
