Norwegian athlete Kashafali has secured a world title in the 100-meter sprint, competing in the T12 classification for visually impaired athletes. Diagnosed with Stargardt disease in 2017, a condition that causes progressive vision loss, Kashafali possesses residual sight but is functionally largely blind, able to see clearly only within approximately two meters.
A former mathematics teacher, Kashafali holds the distinction of being the second-fastest Paralympic athlete across all categories, with a personal best of 10.37 seconds. This time is only bettered by Brazil’s five-time world champion Petrucio Ferreira’s 10.29 seconds. Originally from Goma, Congo, he trains with able-bodied athletes in Oslo as part of his continuous improvement strategy.
