Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Thursday, September 25, 2025, asserted that his potential imprisonment could lead to further complications for the government. He characterized the Home Ministry’s (MHA) blame for recent violent protests in Ladakh as a “scapegoat tactic.” Wangchuk contended that such actions divert focus from the public’s core demands and could escalate the situation, rather than fostering peace.
The MHA had issued a statement attributing the mob violence, which occurred on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, to Wangchuk’s provocation. The statehood movement for Ladakh, led by Wangchuk, saw significant unrest in Leh that day, resulting in four fatalities and approximately 80 injuries, including 40 police personnel. Officials confirmed that police and paramilitary forces deployed teargas to restore order.
The MHA’s statement further noted a series of discussions held with Ladakh leaders through a High Powered Committee (HPC), a sub-committee, and informal channels. However, it alleged that “certain politically motivated individuals” were attempting to disrupt the dialogue process. Additional meetings with Ladakh leaders are scheduled for September 25 and 26.
