Mahatma Gandhi's 1929 Burma Visit: Engagement and Stance on Separation

In 1929, Mahatma Gandhi conducted his third and most extensive visit to Burma, during which he actively engaged with diverse audiences. Touring cities such as Rangoon, Mandalay, Moulmein, and Toungoo, Gandhi delivered numerous speeches to thousands, comprising Burmese monks and laity, as well as members of the Indian diaspora. During this period, Indian merchants in Burma reportedly played a role in facilitating his satyagraha movement.

This visit occurred amidst significant divisions within Burma’s nationalist leadership. Gandhi emerged as a prominent advocate for Burma’s separation from the Indian Empire, a position reportedly influenced by his identification of India with “Bharat,” a Hindu holy land. He publicly stated his willingness for the Burmese people to decide their own future regarding separation.
