An agreement between Israel and Hamas regarding an exchange of Israeli hostages held in Gaza for Palestinian prisoners was announced by President Trump. The announcement, made via social media, follows indirect negotiations facilitated by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the United States. This agreement is reportedly based on the first phase of a 20-point peace plan introduced by the Trump administration in late September.
According to the plan, approximately 20 Israeli hostages are to be exchanged for 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israel and 1,700 Gazans detained during the conflict. This exchange is anticipated to occur three days after Israel formally ratifies a cease-fire. Hamas indicated that the deal would lead to the cessation of hostilities, Israel’s withdrawal from the territory, and increased humanitarian aid access to Gaza. However, Israel disputed this characterization. It remains unclear whether Hamas will disarm as part of this arrangement.
