Mumbai Construction Sites Mandated to Install AQI Sensors

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued notices to real estate companies involved in construction work in Mumbai, mandating the installation of air pollution monitoring sensors at all project sites within 30 days.

This initiative aligns with the Mumbai Air Pollution Mitigation Plan (MAPMP), which identifies construction dust as a primary factor contributing to the city's declining Air Quality Index (AQI). The sensors, designed for hyperlocal monitoring of particulate matter, will display real-time AQI readings on LED boards at each site, with data integrated into the BMC's system.

Officials will use this data to verify compliance with dust mitigation regulations, such as water sprinkling and debris covering. Developers whose sites consistently record poor AQI readings will face action, particularly after recent observations of Mumbai's overall AQI in the "poor" to "very poor" categories.
