Negotiations Conclude First Phase Gaza Agreement Amidst Enduring Conflict

Recent diplomatic efforts have culminated in a phase one agreement for Gaza, described by some as a potential temporary cessation of hostilities within the protracted conflict that began in 1948 and intensified following the October 7, 2023 attack.

The conflict has resulted in significant impacts, including reported damage to Hamas’s leadership, destruction of an estimated 90% of homes in Gaza, and an effect on Israel’s international standing. Reports suggest this extensive damage also contributed to a decline in Hamas’s support among surviving Gaza residents.

Former President Trump played a role in the agreement’s facilitation. Following an Israeli action targeting Hamas negotiators in Qatar, Trump reportedly mediated, leading to an apology from Israeli leadership to Qatar. He then reportedly guided Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept a 20-step plan.

Looking ahead, substantial obstacles are anticipated for subsequent stages of the agreement. These challenges include the demilitarization of Hamas, its relinquishing of control over Gaza, and the repatriation of all hostages. Both Hamas and Netanyahu’s government are cited as potential impediments to further progress. Netanyahu has publicly stated his commitment to continue operations until all Hamas combatants involved in the October 7 attack are neutralized, and Israel’s withdrawal is indicated to be dependent on the elimination of remaining Hamas elements.
