The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar has implemented disciplinary measures following an incident of campus violence on September 8. Five Bangladeshi students have been academically suspended and expelled from the hostel for two semesters, effective immediately and extending until June 2026. These students were enrolled under scholarships from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and Study In India.
According to NIT Director Dilip Kumar Baidya, there is “enough evidence to establish that they were actively involved in campus violence,” and the students are slated to be sent back to Bangladesh. The violence, which lasted approximately 30 minutes, reportedly occurred on the night of September 8 when a group of third-year students allegedly assaulted a group of final-year Bangladeshi students within an NIT hostel. Witnesses indicated the use of rods, knives, and screwdrivers during the altercation. Several students required hospitalization, with two currently in the intensive care unit at Silchar Medical College and Hospital. S.S. Dhar, the Dean of Students’ Welfare, has stated satisfaction with both the investigation and the resulting disciplinary actions.
