Prolonged periods of sitting associated with desk work can impact the body’s metabolic processes, according to Kanikka Malhotra, a consultant dietician and certified diabetes educator. She notes that even with prior or subsequent exercise, extended sitting may slow metabolism and limit calorie expenditure.
Malhotra highlights several potential health indicators linked to prolonged desk work: elevated blood pressure, rising blood sugar levels which could lead to prediabetes, increased levels of “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides, and persistent fatigue attributed to a sluggish metabolism.
To mitigate these effects, Malhotra suggests that minor adjustments, such as improving desk posture and incorporating movement during work hours, can enhance overall health and metabolism by aiding calorie burn, improving circulation, and contributing to muscle development.
