A former minister from the DMK party, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, has been arrested in connection with a corruption case. He was produced before a court in Chennai and subsequently remanded to judicial custody until November 6.

The case involves allegations of collecting money from private school managements by promising government recognition and statutory approvals. Poyyamozhi, who served as the State’s School Education Minister between 2021 and 2026, was arrested by a special team of the Central Crime Branch (CCB). Police sources indicated that the CCB is investigating claims of several crores of rupees being collected as a ‘party fund’ from schools across Tamil Nadu.

The investigation reportedly began after a complaint was lodged with the Chennai Police Commissioner by the secretary of the Tamil Nadu Private Schools Federation. The complaint detailed accusations against an individual accused of collecting money by promising services such as school approvals and recognition, allegedly using influence within the then-ruling administration. Evidence during the inquiry led to Poyyamozhi being named as an accused.

Former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has condemned the arrest, describing it as an act of ‘political vendetta’ by the ruling administration. He stated that the arrest was an attempt to divert public attention from governance issues and assured that Poyyamozhi would address the allegations legally.
