The Supreme Court of India has accepted the findings of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) regarding Reliance Foundation’s wildlife rescue, treatment, and rehabilitation centre, Vantara. Following a review of the SIT’s sealed-cover report, the court found the centre clear of all alleged violations.
The SIT’s findings stated that the acquisition of animals by the Greens Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, now known as Vantara, located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, was conducted in regulatory compliance. The report indicated that the SIT engaged with stakeholders, sought expert opinions, and examined all aspects of the case.
Constituted on August 25 under the chairmanship of former Supreme Court Justice Jasti Chelameswar, alongside other judicial and police officials, the SIT investigated previous petitions. These petitions had raised questions about regulatory oversight, claims of bypassed clearances, and potential ecological risks associated with the 3,500-acre facility, situated within Reliance’s Jamnagar refinery complex.
