The Supreme Court of India has upheld the relocation of spotted deer from Delhi’s A N Jha Deer Park in Hauz Khas. This decision follows a scientific assessment by the Central Empowered Committee (CEC).

The assessment concluded that the urban park’s enclosure is incapable of sustaining its burgeoning deer population, deeming continued confinement "ecologically unsound." A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, hearing the matter on April 27, directed that the translocation be carried out "in a time-bound manner". This process must adhere to strict scientific protocols and align with proposed national guidelines for wildlife relocation.

The Court emphasized that deer, as a wildlife species, should not be confined to restrictive enclosures except under exceptional circumstances justified by legal and ecological considerations. The Supreme Court had previously directed the CEC to comprehensively evaluate the park’s carrying capacity, habitat conditions, and the feasibility of such a relocation.
