Prosecutors in the United Kingdom have discontinued charges against two individuals previously accused of spying for China. Christopher Cash, 30, a former parliamentary researcher, and Christopher Berry, 33, a teacher, had consistently denied the allegations brought under the Official Secrets Act. The accusations claimed the men gathered and provided information prejudicial to state safety and interests between December 2021 and February 2023.
During proceedings at the Old Bailey, Prosecutor Tom Little announced that his team would offer no evidence, stating that “we simply cannot continue to prosecute this case.” Both individuals had been arrested in March 2023 as part of an investigation involving counter-terror police. Beijing had previously described the initial allegations as “malicious slander.”
