West Bengal: Parties Exchange Allegations of BLO Threats

On Friday, October 31, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal leveled mutual allegations concerning threats made against Booth Level Officers (BLOs). These accusations surfaced even before the scheduled door-to-door voter list verification process was set to begin.

The BJP lodged an official complaint with the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), West Bengal. This followed the circulation of a social media video where Girindra Nath Barman, the Trinamool Cooch Behar district chairman, is allegedly heard threatening to tie up BLOs should they arrive with incomplete voter lists. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari (BJP) publicly shared this video, condemning the alleged remarks.

Later that same day, the Trinamool Congress responded by releasing its own video. This footage allegedly shows Mr. Adhikari himself threatening BLOs, reportedly warning them of arrest if they did not follow "instructions." Consequently, both major parties have accused each other of intimidating officials involved in electoral duties.
