One of the most critical aspects of managing your CSD privileges is tracking your active buying cycles. The CSD enforces rigid time frames to prevent commercial misuse of subsidized vehicles. Violating these timing constraints results in automatic system bans on the AFD platform.
Two-Wheeler Timelines: The 4-Year Window
For motorcycles, scooters, and mopeds, the regulation is simple and applies uniformly across all operational ranks, including serving personnel, retirees, and dependents.
You can purchase a two-wheeler once every 4 years. The timeline is calculated exactly from the date of your last CSD two-wheeler invoice, not by calendar years. For example, if you took delivery of a bike on 15 May 2022, you become eligible to apply for your next two-wheeler on or after 16 May 2026.
Four-Wheeler Timelines: The 8-Year Life Cycle for JCOs and ORs
For Junior Commissioned Officers and Other Ranks, car buying privileges are highly restricted compared to Officers. Personnel in these tiers are permitted a maximum of two car purchases during their entire lifetime, structured around specific career milestones:
- The First Car Purchase: Can only be made after completing a minimum of 5 years of active, continuous service.
- The Second Car Purchase: Can generally be made only after retirement or entering the veteran ecosystem.
- The Intervening Gap: A strict minimum buffer of 8 years must pass between the first car purchase and the second car purchase. The portal balances this check automatically against your historical Permanent Account Number (PAN) records.
Officer Car Cycles: The 5-Year Rolling Window
Commissioned Officers enjoy a recurring rolling ownership cycle. They are entitled to buy a car once every 5 years. Unlike JCOs and ORs, there is no lifetime cap on the number of cars an officer can purchase, provided the five-year structural cooling-off period is fully observed between consecutive line-item allocations.
