A tenth-class student in Anantapur was seriously injured after being attacked with an electric chainsaw inside her classroom on Saturday. Another student sustained minor leg injuries during the incident.
The attack occurred at Zilla Parishad High School in Raptadu while a mathematics lesson was in progress. According to the class teacher, the accused entered the classroom and attacked the victim indiscriminately before fleeing the scene with the chainsaw. Students and staff were reportedly in shock.
Police identified the accused as Hemanth, a close relative of the victim, and arrested him hours later at Dharmavaram railway station. Police suspect the attacker may have recently acquired the chainsaw and had possibly reconnoitered the school premises beforehand. The motive for the attack is still under investigation.
The injured student was initially taken to Government General Hospital in Anantapur and later transferred to a private hospital in Bengaluru for further treatment. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed his shock and directed police to conduct a swift investigation, assuring the victim’s family of government support. Other officials also expressed their concern.
