Far-right AfD forecast to make gains as North Rhine-Westphalia goes to polls

Local elections in Germany’s most populous state are anticipated to show significant gains for the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party, marking the first major electoral test for Chancellor Friedrich Merz since assuming office four months ago.

Countrywide focus will be on whether the AfD can replicate its prior successes in states of the former communist east. The party has topped several national opinion polls since the federal election in February. Experts suggest that if the AfD secures a greater foothold in local politics through mayoralties and councillor posts, it will become more challenging for mainstream parties to uphold their commitment to a “firewall” preventing political collaboration with the AfD at the federal level.

Additionally, international issues have influenced the North Rhine-Westphalia campaign, albeit indirectly affecting local political matters. Chancellor Merz is perceived as a bolder figure in representing Germany’s interests abroad compared to his Social Democrat predecessor, Olaf Scholz.
