New Ladybird Species Identified in UK for First Time

A ladybird species typically indigenous to continental Europe has been officially recorded in the United Kingdom for the first time, with sightings confirmed in both Southampton and the New Forest. The species, identified as the Little Arboreal Ladybird, marks a new addition to the UK’s documented insect fauna.

Professor Russell Wynn, who serves as Director of Wild New Forest and chairs the New Forest Biodiversity Forum, stated that instances of the Little Arboreal Ladybird were found within moth traps across the New Forest. Professor Wynn noted that while there might have been previous unconfirmed observations, “there were no confirmed British Records prior to this influx.” The species commonly inhabits regions of France and other parts of continental Europe, suggesting a cross-Channel migration.

Following these confirmed sightings, the UK Species Inventory is anticipated to officially acknowledge the Little Arboreal Ladybird as a new species for Britain. Professor Wynn also commented on the impact of recent weather patterns, observing that while the hot summer presented difficulties for certain wetland animals, it proved beneficial for numerous insect populations, including various ladybird species.

The New Forest, known for its diverse ecological makeup encompassing ancient woodlands, fens, heaths, and bogs, appears to be an amenable habitat for colonizing species. Professor Wynn elaborated on the area’s suitability, stating, “The quality of the habitat in the new forest and the work we’re doing to expand and restore those habitats, make us a good landing point for species that are hopping across the channel and looking for a decent habitat to colonise.” This ongoing conservation work has also been instrumental in the re-establishment of other species, such as the 13 Spot Ladybird, within the New Forest.
