Scottie Scheffler significantly advanced his position during the second round of play, moving from 14th place overnight to third. His ascent was largely propelled by a performance that included ten birdies, though a double bogey on the par-four 14th hole prevented him from securing a share of the lead.
Scheffler recorded five birdies on both the front and back nines, totaling ten for the round. The double bogey occurred after a chip shot on the par-four 14th found a bunker. Following an opening round of 70, which concluded a streak of 21 consecutive scores under 70, Scheffler carded a 68 in the second round.
Reflecting on the course conditions, Scheffler stated, “There’s definitely some tricks to this golf course, things you’ve got to get used to. There are things that are hard to notice in the practice rounds. But when you start playing under tournament conditions you start seeing a little of those nuances.”
Elsewhere on the leaderboard, US Open champion JJ Spaun and Russell Henley are positioned at nine-under-par. Among the Ryder Cup players still competing in the event, Spaun and Henley are currently the highest-ranked. Griffin, a captain’s pick set to debut at the upcoming Ryder Cup, also offered remarks on his competitive approach for the tournament, stating, “I’ve got to have that chasing mindset as a leader because I know all those guys behind me are going to stay aggressive and I’ve got to do everything I can to stay in front.”
